GOOD CALL

So you’re in the market for a new smartphone, but with so many brands and models to choose from, where do you even start? Hint: here.

When selecting a new device, you have to balance all of the features you desire from a smartphone with the limitations of your budget. We at FACT were recently introduced to the new OPPO Reno4 and felt the need to share our findings in order to hopefully enlighten you on what this impressive smartphone has to offer. The new design-led OPPO Reno4 series includes three variants: Reno4, Reno Pro, and the top-of-the-range Reno Pro 5G.

For this review, we went with Reno4 to see what this smartphone delivers, even at an accessible level. Upon opening the box, you will find the Quick Start Guide, a Safety Guide (including warranty card), a transparent protective case, and a tool to eject the sim card. One layer of packaging down and you’ll find the phone itself, along with a USB Type-C Data cable and earphones. Priced at BD 149.9, the Reno4 smartphone comes in a choice of two colours: a Galactic Blue (that was developed together with Pantone Color Institute) and Space Black (with a specially designed OPPO monogram that appears translucent under light).

The one we have for review in Galactic Blue colour. The front of the phone is made from Corning Gorilla Glass 5, ensuring its 6.4-inch AMOLED screen is well-protected. The back is made of plastic, while the frame is made from metal. With a height of 160.3mm, a width of 73.9mm, a thickness of 7.7mm, and a weight of 165g, this lightweight device is not on the small side, but feels comfortable in hand. Also noteworthy is the size of its screen, which is perfect for scrolling through social media, watching videos, or playing games. Now for the technical stuff. This classy piece has a display resolution of 1080×2400 pixels, with a pixel density of 409ppi. The screen-to-body ratio is 90.7 percent, and the aspect ratio is 20:9. As for the Dual Punch Hole display features? OPPO is introducing on Reno4 an AI-enhanced Smart Sensor, located at the top left of the screen, which helps users on privacy protection and provides innovative and touch-free ways for users to control their devices. Platform-wise, the operating system is Android 10 and the user interface is Colour OS 7.2. Other features include a 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor and a RAM storage of 8 GB plus 128 GB ROM.

An expandable storage of up to 256 GB is available via a Micro SD Card. As far as the camera is concerned, this phone boasts truly unique features thanks to its 48MP High-definition Quad Camera that includes a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP mono camera, and a 2MP macro camera. The front camera is a 32 MP primary camera. We’d be remiss not to mention the following feature: with just one tap, AI Color Portrait on Reno4 makes the person in the shot highlighted in natural colour, and mutes the background colours into black and white.

With additional features including Smart Spying Prevention and Gesture Control amongst others, we were thoroughly impressed after only a few days spent with the OPPO Reno4. With a decent 4015mAh battery that takes 20 minutes for a half charge – thanks to OPPO’s 30W VOOC 4.0 flash charging technology – and a price tag that won’t break the bank, you simply can’t go wrong with this one. ✤
