Artist’s daughter and exhibition curator to reflect on her largest solo exhibition

As part of its ongoing mission to amplify voices and serve as a platform for dialogue, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is to host a special online “Mathaf Talk” on 17 November with Mohammed Rashid Al Thani, curator of the Huguette Caland: Faces and Places exhibition, and Brigitte Caland, Scholar and Artist’s daughter.

The discussion will reflect on the conception and delivery of the largest solo museum exhibition of artist Huguette Caland (1931 – 2019), held at Mathaf from 2 August until 30 November. Brigitte Caland, the artist’s daughter and family representative of her estate, and guest speaker Tarek El-Ariss, Professor and Chair of Middle Eastern Studies at Dartmouth College, will join the conversation.

Mathaf Director, Abdellah Karroum, said: “Caland is a major figure in the art world, her work hugely contributed to the discourse on art histories from the Middle East, and her fascinating personality is a symbol of liberation and fight for equality. It is an honour to have her daughter joining us for this event. We invite members of the community to join us for what will be an illuminating discussion and to also visit the exhibition before it closes on 30 November.”

Huguette Caland: Faces and Places traces Caland’s journey across three continents, encompassing the faces and places that inform her rich body of artwork, and highlighting the line as a predominant theme in her work. The collection is organised around three different geographical locations that defined Caland’s personal and professional journey: Beirut, Paris and California.

The online talk will be held via Zoom at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, 17 November.
